Bear HC Matt Eberflus says there’s no reason to sound the alarm with CB Jaylon Johnson work with the second unit.
“He just got back into action right now,Eberflus said, via NBC Sports. “So we just see where he is with his conditioning and that kind of stuff. But 1s and 2s, we all move guys. We have a bunch of guys with the 1s, with the 2s, we have 3s in there. But nothing to read there yet.”
This is Eberflus’ first chance to see Johnson on the pitch, as he missed the voluntary minicamp last week.
“I like what I see“said Eberflus. “I mean, he moves really well. His change of direction is nice. He has really good hands. As you know, it has a good size. So now really looking at his coverage ability, and he’s in a good place. And it’s in a very good place. So we just work with him and try again to assess his skills, and we’ll coach him as we go.”
Johnson understands that what he did with the previous regime no longer matters and that he needs to prove himself on the pitch to the new coaching staff.
“I mean, that’s my mindset to move on,“, Johnson said. “It’s a full reset. Everything I’ve done in the past with the other coaches, with the other staffs, I mean, it really doesn’t mean too much. I mean, the movie isn’t going to lie to you. But at the end of the day, they want me to show them what I can do in person to get ahead.”
Lions LT Taylor Decker will be taking it easy for now with a foot injury, one he doesn’t want to harass when the new season kicks off in a few months.
“I’ve said it before with other issues I’ve had, when you’re not there it’s nauseating,” Decker said, via Benjamin Raven of MLive.com. “Of course I want to be there. It’s just kind of being smart, maintenance. I’m talking with the coaching staff and coaches right now. So hopefully when the time comes for camp, it’s “No problem, get going, you’re good to go”. And that’s the game plan, and that’s what he’s aiming for. If there was a game, I would play 100%. Basically the opinion I got was that it was something that was going to get better. It’s just kind of a pain in the ass that will take a little while. Just be smart about it right now. Like I said, when the time comes, the balls fly and we really have to play, it’s not even a thought.
Vikings GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah explained why the team chose to stay the course with QB Kirk Cousins this offseason. Adofo-Mensah believes the team can put enough talent around Cousins to achieve their ultimate goal.
“Kirk is a very good quarterback, said Adofo-Mensah, via PFT. “Things are binary. Either you are a champion or you are not. Either you are the GOAT or you are not. I don’t think that’s really how you manage to build teams. When you study historically what won the NFL, the quarterback’s special game is important, but there are other ways to win.”
Vikings HC Kevin O’Connell believes Cousins is a great quarterback, which validated Adofo-Mensah’s decision to roll with the current signalman, at least for another season.
“What we’re trying to do is first and foremost get Kirk in the fold. I had a presentation with him. ‘Hey, you’re our partner in all of this. We’re trying to build this thing so that you guys are the best version of yourself, Kevin and me. Once we do that, we might be able to go back and reassess where we are, but we think the best version of him and surrounding him with other stuff gives us a really good chance. Ultimately, I can’t sit here and tell you that I know for sure what it’s going to be, but we think it gives us a great chance to be there at the end with a chance to make it. . Obviously extending it gives us more time, right? A lot of that it’s just that these things don’t take off in a day, in a month. These are the ones that take a bit of time – they have already been exhibited together. I think the last time Kevin coached him [in Washington] I think everything was in the same situation where it was a one-year contract and Kevin was like, ‘Look, I want to pour into this guy. I think he’s one of the best quarterbacks I’ve ever been around, so I want to invest in this guy, see what he can do best and we’ll see what happens in the end. We thought that was the best way to go.”
